What is Metallomics?
Amongst the '-omics' fields, metallomics is a relative newcomer. Ryszard Lobinski and colleagues at the National Research Council of France (CNRS), Pau, provide their definition:
Metallomics is the systematic study of metallomes and the interactions and functional connections of metal ions and their species with genes, proteins, metabolites and other biomolecules within organisms and ecosystems.

Metallomics Center of the Americas
The Metallomics Center of the Americas was established in the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences in January 2007. It is the first organization of its kind as well as an unique partnership between The University of Cincinnati and Agilent Technologies.
Currently, the new Agilent 8800 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS is being used in the Metallomics center for total metal analysis, speciation, and sulfur and phosphorous detection using reaction cell technology.

Metallomics Journal
Metallomics, a new journal from RSC Publishing, was launched in early 2009. The announcement was made at the International Forum of Proteins meeting on Health, Food and Environment by Joseph A. Caruso, who chaired the Editorial Board of the new journal. Metallomics is a subject that is receiving great attention as a new frontier in the investigation of trace elements in biology and is expected to develop as an interdisciplinary science complementary to genomics and proteomics. This timely new journal covers the research fields related to biometals and is expected to be the core publication for the emerging metallomics community as they strive to fully understand the role of metals in biological, environmental, and clinical systems.

Metallomics Conference
The 2009 International Symposium on Metallomics was held on June 7 - 10, 2009 in Cincinnati, OH USA which immediately followed the ASMS Meeting in Philadelphia. ISM `09 built on the outstanding meeting held in Nagoya, Japan in 2007, bringing together scientists from the biological, chemical, environmental, clinical and measurement sciences to effect a greater understanding of the role of metals and metal compounds in many biological, chemical, environmental and clinical systems.
